Day 15, halfway there! I had been sketching my favorite squirrel in my free time and finally completed the 3 today.

#56 - Apples, ghosts and depth

Still more apples 8x10 oil on canvas panel I've been discovering depth in painting. And today, while I started late and didn't have my full 2 hours (only 1 1/2), I still managed to make some progress. See the apple in the back? It's not really painted in there! I painted it, then wiped it off. Then painted everything else and touched it up a bit with very thin paint. The result is really cool! It made it recede, creating even more depth in the painting. Now, in not having the whole of my allotted morning painting time, I am forced to put this painting aside for a little while as life takes over once more. But I think that once it dries a little, and I go back into it to make adjustments, I'll be able to dramatically increase the perception of depth. I'm going to stew on it and maybe go enjoy some of the other apples I have because after staring at them all morning, I'm hungry.

Painting Dappled Light and Birches at Moose Point State Park

Dappled Light and Birches 9x12 While in Maine, I was fortunate enough to attend a painting demonstration by Marc Dalessio at the Haynes Gallery . Aside from being the first demonstration to point out the dangers of painting outside (apples showered down as we sat beneath the tree to watch), it was one of the first where I could follow the whole painting process start to finish and understand all that was being a said. I made sure I came away with 3 main points and some minor ones as well. 1) Values must be accurate and made with ease. 2) Drawing with contour lines is a must to outline things accurately and quickly before the light changes. 3) The process is to work from big shapes to small, watered down paint to thicker paint, dark to light. Of course all of these things look easy to do, but are harder when in the field. So today I tried them. I went to Moose Point State Park, where there is any combination of woods, sea, or field to paint,, and ended

And now for something completely different . . . . Okay, it's not fruit. The perspective's a bit strange. But it's different and I still managed to paint it fairly well. The different shades of white after a while were a bit frustrating, and I totally messed up the plate and its shadow (in terms of perspective) by applying too many brush strokes. The honey jar, however, I love! I did learn that I need a smaller brush for details; making different shades around the rim of the cup was next to impossible. Yay! Another excuse for an art store visit! Definitely a painting to think about and possibly make better in the future!
