30-in-30: Day 24

I'm starting to think the hardest thing to illustrate is the same as the hardest thing to paint, people you know. This is an illustration based on my daughter. While I got the body language mostly right, and her favorite thing to wear, the hair still needs work and I've given up on the face for tonight. Also my first time trying to incorporate ink as the hair. I'll add it to the steadily growing pile of "try again soon".

Back in the habit again. . .

I have been discreetly practicing for the last 6 months. Not that I was able to achieve the consistency I wanted, but I did manage to show up enough to keep myself going. Now my Bunny is 18 months and sleeping through the night . . .mostly. She's achieved some semblance of routine and schedule and therefore I have as well. So back to the drawing board, quite literally. Here is the practice for today. Paul Foxton you make that shape replication look so easy! I have lots of work to do on my arms wobbling again. As you can see my lines are nowhere near straight. And my eye is having trouble with values, although that is partly due to the awful lighting in my closet/studio. This is my favorite challenge. With violin practice there are nasty, torturing Kreutzer exercise; with drawing it's Bargue. Painting Dappled Light and Birches at Moose Point State Park

Dappled Light and Birches 9x12 While in Maine, I was fortunate enough to attend a painting demonstration by Marc Dalessio at the Haynes Gallery . Aside from being the first demonstration to point out the dangers of painting outside (apples showered down as we sat beneath the tree to watch), it was one of the first where I could follow the whole painting process start to finish and understand all that was being a said. I made sure I came away with 3 main points and some minor ones as well. 1) Values must be accurate and made with ease. 2) Drawing with contour lines is a must to outline things accurately and quickly before the light changes. 3) The process is to work from big shapes to small, watered down paint to thicker paint, dark to light. Of course all of these things look easy to do, but are harder when in the field. So today I tried them.
